It was 9:45 am. Our electric piano was brought outside and all the cables and cords connected, but to eveyone's shock, when Sonja put her fingers to the keys there was no sound.

Time was ticking.

People were waiting.

And our tech team was troubleshooting.

We were getting ready to start the service by singing a cappella (which wouldn't  have been so bad) but our tech fellas figured out what cord was the culprit and "presto" we had sound!

Soon we were singing, "God Welcomes All" from the All Creation Sings to piano accompaniment and drums - thanks to Kyler and Marcia.

That was the start of our first outdoor service of the season, which was also the occassion to welcome Chaplain Kadee from Covenant House together with Fatima Q. who had come to share her family's story of fleeing from Afghanistan and her hope to bring them to Canada. We not only learned about the threat to people like her parents who worked for western media and diplomatic missions, but also the persecution of the Hazara people by the Taliban.

Fatima and Chaplain Kadee, have raised $50, 000 of the $55, 000 necessary for the refugee sponsorship application. They have done this by appealing to other churches outside the Lutheran family. Thank-you to those from our congregation who have already responded to help close the gap! If you would like to make a donation,  you can write a cheque or transfer by email - gloriadei5838@gmail.com . If you are reading this and you are not a member of our congregation, the easiest way to donate is through our Canada Helps Page, and selecting "2. Refugee Support, Fatima Q's family Fund" from our drop down menu.

Following our service we enjoyed delicious burgers and conversation in the warm sunshine. Thanks again to our BBQ chefs, Ken J.and Kyler and for indulging the kid in all of us with popsicle treats!

And thanks as always to Ken P. for the pics!

Refugee Sunday was also the occassion for Mohammad to share his good news with us that he has received "Protected Person" status from the Canadian government. Our heartfelt congratulations!
